We refer to the letter “Veteran instructor without cert now can’t teach SkillsFuture course” (June 23).

Dance classes and other lifestyle courses supported by agencies like the National Silver Academy do not require instructors to be certified by the Institute for Adult Learning (IAL).

For industry-oriented courses, it is important for adult educators to have both the content knowledge and the pedagogical understanding to impart skills effectively and help workers level up with confidence.

As such, adult educators are required to obtain the Workforce Skills Qualifications (WSQ) Advanced Certificate in Learning and Performance (ACLP) to teach SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG)-supported courses, and they must continually upgrade themselves to remain registered as adult educators.

We agree with the letter writer Low Boon Hua that experience and skills are important.

Hence, in addition to the WSQ ACLP, there is also a skills credentialling pathway which recognises competencies demonstrated through sustained industry and professional practice, and enables eligible practitioners to deliver SSG-supported courses in their area of professional expertise.

IAL will continue to exercise flexibility in rapidly emerging fields to fast-track the registration of experts as trainers, so that valuable skills can be quickly imparted to the workforce.
