New regulations against cycling on pedestrian-only paths have taken effect ( Cyclists face fines, jail for riding on pedestrian-only paths as enforcement begins on July 1
While I agree that cyclists should stay within their designated lanes, I am concerned about the safety of the painted cycling paths.
These paths, typically painted red to distinguish them from pedestrian walkways, can become slippery when wet.
Many cyclists have voiced this concern. Even while walking on these painted surfaces, I have slipped more than once after it rained.
I suggest that these paths be left unpainted or resurfaced with a textured material similar to regular tarmac. This would not only be more cost-effective in the long run, but also safer, given Singapore’s weather conditions. Better traction would mean fewer accidents.
