I refer to Mr Chan Whye Shiung’s letter “Dad’s letter was run in the Forum 44 years ago” (Nov 21).

Just like Mr Chan’s civic-minded father, I have been an avid contributor to the Forum page over the past 30 years, mostly on issues of public health and public safety.

I am a 77-year-old tertiary-educated member of the Pioneer Generation who has completed full-time national service.

Now saddled with multiple health problems, I feel my days are numbered. So this may well be my last Forum contribution.

Celebrations aside, SG60 is an opportune time for some serious soul-searching as Singapore marks 60 years of independence in 2025.

My July 5, 1997, Forum letter “S’poreans must learn how to speak up and ask questions” is even more valid today.

Despite 60 long years of independence, why are so many Singaporeans still afraid of speaking up? Journalists call this the “please do not quote me” syndrome.

If we cannot speak up freely and frankly to help shape a better future for our children and grandchildren, who will?

In another published Forum letter, I argued that while money is needed for a comfortable life, money is not and must not be everything. Otherwise, we will breed Singaporeans who are rich in material assets but poor in human values.

Of what use is all your acquired wealth if you do not have the health to enjoy it?

Remember, our children’s generation will ultimately reap what we adults sow today.
