It is disappointing that only about 50 lorries have been fitted with mandatory speed limiters as at end-2024 ( Mandatory speed limiters fitted on only about 50 lorries since Jan 2024: Shanmugam
The Traffic Police has said that there are about 17,000 eligible lorries required to install such speed limiters, which ensure that these vehicles do not exceed a speed limit of 60kmh.
Although the deadline for the installation of speed limiters is 2026, it is not appropriate for lorry owners to wait till the last minute to rush and get them installed.
Yes, speeding is one of various reasons for accidents. But why delay using an important device which can improve road safety for all road users? The Traffic Police should reaffirm that there is no extension of the deadline and reiterate the penalties involved.
