Forum: Move to have prominent signs against smoking in neighbourhood parks

We thank Forum writer Chay Yu Sam for the letter “Stronger measures needed against smoking and littering” (June 30).
Smoking is currently prohibited in more than 49,000 premises, both indoor and outdoor, including public parks and gardens.
The National Environment Agency (NEA) is aware of the smoking and littering feedback around Jalan Rumah Tinggi and the ABC Market. We have stepped up enforcement and issued 11 tickets for public health offences in the vicinity since January 2025. NEA will continue our enforcement efforts and work with stakeholders, including the town council, to put up prominent signs informing smokers not to light up within neighbourhood parks.
We encourage smokers to be socially responsible and not to light up in smoking-prohibited places. Friendly and timely reminders from family, friends and other members of the community can help to reinforce the right social behaviour and norms. Smokers should also put out their cigarettes completely and dispose of them in designated bins. A concerted effort by all is crucial to build a clean and green Singapore.
