I refer to the article “ As Singapore pursues quality tourism, some locals raise questions about prices at attractions
As a parent of school-going children, I have not had difficulty finding free or affordable attractions to visit in Singapore. Singapore citizens and permanent residents enjoy free admission to the National Heritage Board’s national museums and heritage institutions, many featuring engaging sections for children.
While there are pricier attractions, there are often nearby alternatives that are free or more affordable. For example, while there are various ticketed attractions at Gardens by the Bay, the public can enjoy shows featuring animatronic dinosaurs at the Jurassic Nest Food Hall for free. For cable car rides, instead of the Mount Faber Line which costs $31 per adult, we opt for the Sentosa Line which costs $4 per adult.
While suggestions such as using SG60 vouchers to defray ticket prices are certainly worthwhile, I would caution against the mindset that ticketed attractions are always more enjoyable.
I agree with Associate Professor Lau Kong Cheen’s suggestion that more can be done to raise awareness of special promotions. A centralised website – run by a government agency or as a ground-up initiative – that lists free attractions, ticket prices and updated promotions can be a helpful resource.
It would save people time navigating multiple sites and, in turn, boost local tourism.
