The debate over whether F&B establishments should provide free tap water has resurfaced, most recently through a petition on Change.org.
While the concern is not new, it deserves renewed attention.
At stake is more than just cost – it is public health. In Singapore’s tropical climate, hydration is essential. That is why water coolers have been installed at hawker centres, parks and transport hubs to offer free, healthy hydration options.
When restaurants charge for water, it can push diners – especially cost-conscious ones – towards sweetened drinks, undermining initiatives like Healthier SG and Nutri-Grade labelling.
Some businesses cite overheads, but the numbers say otherwise. While we recognise that businesses must remain financially sustainable, goodwill is also valuable. In tough economic conditions, this small gesture could foster customer loyalty.
What we face now is a lose-lose: customers feel shortchanged, businesses risk reputational harm, and health outcomes may suffer.
The Government and industry groups can help. Ideally, all dine-in outlets should provide free tap water. If that is too disruptive, a transparent system identifying which places do so would empower consumers and nudge change.
Singapore’s tap water is not just safe, it is world-class. Let’s treat it as the basic necessity it is.
