I refer to the article “Debate heats up over driving age limit, medical test after accidents involving elderly drivers” (Nov 3).
With Singapore’s ageing population, it is inevitable that there will be more older drivers on the roads.
I believe a driver should be allowed to drive as long as he or she is medically and mentally fit to do so.
But it would be helpful for other drivers to be able to recognise older drivers on the road.
Much like how drivers are encouraged to be more patient and cautious with probationary drivers displaying the P-plate, having older drivers display a similar distinguishing plate on the vehicle would help other drivers be aware and be more patient around them.
This would create a safer driving environment for all drivers, not only the older driver.
Companies selling car insurance could also lend their support to such an initiative by offering an incentive to an older driver who displays such a plate.
