Following the recent death of an HDB resident, it is right that we reflect on how we, as a society, can better foster harmonious community living (

, Sept 24).

It is therefore relevant to review HDB’s Designing for Life road map, which rightly places residents’ holistic well-being at the forefront. A fundamental component of achieving, in HDB’s words, “solutions that will bring about positive well-being outcomes” is the acoustic comfort of our homes.

In our dense high-rise environment, persistent noise is a significant source of stress that can strain neighbourly relations.

To bring this vision of well-being to fruition, I hope HDB will consider making modern soundproofing a key priority. Building on the foresight of excellent schemes like the Home Improvement Programme and Enhancement for Active Seniors (Ease), better soundproofing could be integrated as an essential component for new homes, and as a top-up scheme for existing homes.

Just as Ease makes homes safer for our seniors, better acoustics can create a sanctuary of calm for all residents.

Investing in better soundproofing could be an upstream way to reduce a common source of friction.

It is a tangible step towards fulfilling the promise of the road map – building not just flats, but truly peaceful homes where harmonious communities can flourish and young families can thrive.
