It was disheartening to see the situation when I walked by Bishan Stadium on Feb 13: On the pitch, Balestier Khalsa FC was locked in a fierce contest against Young Lions, yet only a small number of spectators were present in the stands.
For any sport to thrive, support from fans is just as important as the efforts of the athletes themselves. The energy of a crowd can inspire players, lift morale and create a vibrant sporting atmosphere that fuels performance. Without that support, even the most competitive match can feel subdued.
If Singapore is serious about promoting sports, perhaps the Singapore Sports Council could consider offering free admission to selected matches with low attendance rates.
This could help boost crowd turnout, strengthen community engagement, and also give Singaporeans a meaningful way to spend their free time while supporting our local teams. Building a sporting culture requires not only talented athletes, but also passionate supporters who stand behind them.
