Food delivery riders on bicycles and e-bikes provide a useful service, and have become a common sight across Singapore.
But I have seen many flouting traffic rules. Commonly observed offences include beating red lights, riding against traffic flow, and weaving dangerously between vehicles.
What I find increasingly concerning is the number of riders not using lights at night. These riders are almost invisible to motorists, creating serious risks for everyone on the road.
I recently witnessed a delivery cyclist making an illegal turn at night and crashing into the sidewalk after a driver swerved to avoid her. She escaped with abrasions, but it could easily have been far worse.
The safety of road users must be taken seriously. The Traffic Police should make it mandatory for all bicycles used for delivery to have working front and rear lights, and reflectors, and for riders to wear helmets. Food delivery platforms should also verify that delivery riders are following traffic rules, and suspend repeat offenders.
Public education and firm enforcement would help ensure compliance. Singapore should act now to prevent accidents involving delivery riders.
