As Singaporeans welcome the Year of the Snake, they are also looking forward to seeing what Budget 2025 announcements Prime Minister Lawrence Wong will make.

This year’s emphasis on training, skills and jobs goes to the heart of building a resilient and adaptable workforce. It is an essential focus as we navigate the challenges of a rapidly changing global economy.

Just as the snake’s sharp senses represent heightened intuition and adaptability, Singapore’s workforce must embody these traits to stay competitive.

The Government’s focus on training and skills development signals the importance of preparing for the future by shedding outdated practices and embracing new opportunities.

Measures such as upskilling programmes and incentives for businesses to create quality jobs to support mid-career transitions are vital for a nation striving to remain relevant in a world transformed by technology and evolving industries.

Singaporeans have long appreciated the “hongbao” from the annual Budget. It is a thoughtful blend of financial support and forward-looking policies that uplift households and businesses.

Training subsidies, enhanced SkillsFuture initiatives and schemes to promote lifelong learning are more than just benefits. They are also stepping stones to ensure every Singaporean is equipped to thrive in an era of constant change.

However, these measures require active participation. A “hongbao” is valuable only when it is opened, and, similarly, the onus is on us to seize training opportunities, embrace career adaptability and cultivate a growth mindset.

As we await the Budget 2025 announcement, let’s look beyond the immediate “goodies” and recognise how the policies lay the foundation for a more secure and dynamic future.

Wishing all readers a happy and prosperous Chinese New Year.
