After going unbeaten in the group stage, Singapore’s Lions were given a stark reality check by a second-string Thailand side in the first leg of the ASEAN Championship semi-final (Lions face uphill battle after 3-1 loss to Thailand in ASEAN C’ship semi-final, 1st leg, Aug 15).

What was heartening to see, however, was that the players did not drop their heads but continued to give their all on the pitch.

More impressively, instead of the usual jeering, the fans at Jalan Besar Stadium were constantly cheering the team on, a point acknowledged by coach Gavin Lee.

I was at the Kallang Wave mall live screening and a few hundred of us were also cheering the team enthusiastically throughout the match. This is a clear testament and endorsement of the good work put in by Lee and his players.

While I think we will not overcome Thailand on Aug 18, it is safe to say that the team has slowly but surely recaptured the hearts of long-suffering fans. I urge the team to continue their positivity, helmed by Lee and supported by all stakeholders.

Majulah Singapura!
