The debates over graduate employment require a deeper dive to address the anxieties of students, families and employers. Two steps could improve both confidence and policy insights.
First, we should make better use of the Careers and Skills Passport (CSP). If students’ verified records, including internships, are integrated into the CSP early, it can serve as a bridge between post-secondary institutes and the workplace. This would not only help graduates showcase their readiness to employers, but also accelerate the adoption of the CSP as a national platform for skills recognition.
Second, we can enhance official employment statistics by linking CPF contribution records and SkillsFuture claims. CPF contributions are a strong proxy for full-time employment, while SkillsFuture claims can indicate when individuals are upskilling instead of working.
This would not only strengthen Singapore’s national workforce tracking ecosystem, but also provide greater assurance to students and families during the transition from school to work.
