I am deeply heartened to read Ms Christina Ng’s letter “ Grateful to woman who helped me when I fell in train
To the young woman who stayed with Ms Ng and accompanied her while she was injured, I extend my heartfelt thanks for going the extra mile. Your swift and caring actions ensured that Ms Ng received timely medical attention. The kindness you showed that day was a reminder that all it takes is a small act of kindness to make someone’s day.
I also commend Ms Ng for taking the time to write in. In doing so, she has shone a light on the everyday heroes among us, and inspired others to share their own experiences of kindness.
In my experience, I often witness similar acts of care and empathy on public transport.
A commuter giving up a seat to someone who needs it more, offering directions to a lost passenger or simply greeting the bus captain.
Yet, such moments often go unnoticed, while negative behaviour tends to dominate online spaces.
This can give the false impression that kindness is rare in our shared spaces, when in fact, it quietly thrives.
I encourage more Singaporeans to share stories of kindness they have witnessed. By starting small in our digital spaces, simple acts of kindness are sure to have ripple effects on the wider community, boosting morale and even brightening one’s commute.
Through collective action, whether it be acting selflessly, or speaking about witnessing kindness, we can be greater together.
