X owner Elon Musk’s recent remark on Dec 5 that Singapore is “going extinct” – in response to a post on Singapore’s baby crisis – has sparked widespread debate.

His comment, based on Singapore’s record-low fertility rate of 0.97 and its rapidly ageing population, highlights a pressing issue. By 2030, nearly one in four Singaporeans will be over 65, posing challenges to the economy and society.

Mr Musk’s observation may be harsh, but it underlines an undeniable reality. However, Singapore’s history proves we are anything but passive in the face of adversity. The nation has consistently turned challenges into opportunities through innovation.

For young people like myself, this is a chance to redefine how we live and work. Technology, from artificial intelligence to robotics, can ease manpower gaps while unlocking careers in sustainable and high-tech industries.

That said, technology alone is not enough. Policies supporting family life – such as parental leave, affordable childcare and housing – must evolve further. Equally important is a cultural shift towards valuing work-life balance and viewing parenthood as both attainable and fulfilling.

Mr Musk’s comment should not be seen as a death knell but as a call to action. Singapore’s young are resilient, resourceful, and ready to lead. Extinction is not our story; adaptation is. Let us prove that Singapore’s future remains bright.
