It’s heartening to see a growing affection for animals in Singapore. Despite this, there is still some resistance and exclusion when it comes to guide dogs in some spaces.

Guide dogs are specially trained assistance animals that serve as the eyes for the visually impaired. They navigate complex environments, avoid obstacles and ensure their handler’s safety.

Laws already allow guide dogs access to food establishments and shopping malls.

Organisations like Singapore Airlines lead by example, permitting guide dogs on flights.

Still, challenges persist. Public awareness remains low, and some private establishments continue to deny access or force handlers to use back entrances.

Paralympian Sophie Soon and social advocate Cassandra Chiu have both encountered challenges with their guide dogs. Such incidents highlight the daily struggles faced by guide-dog users despite legal protections.

A balanced approach is essential. Certain areas in hospitals, for example, may restrict access for hygiene reasons.

These cases show the need for thoughtful policies that protect both public health and the rights of persons with disabilities.

We need to create a more inclusive society where guide-dog users can navigate spaces freely and with dignity.
