I thank Voices of Youth Forum writer Lee Qin Yuan for advocating the learning of automated external defibrillators (AEDs), which empowers individuals to step up in emergencies and serve their community when it matters most (Learn how to use the many AEDs available, Oct 21).

It is heartening that our youth are socially responsible and recognise the value of learning first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) skills and how to use AEDs.

When every second counts, using an AED before first responders arrive can make a significant difference, saving critical treatment time and vastly improving a person’s rate of survival. With its easy-to-follow instructions, an AED lets non-medical individuals take swift, life-saving action. Learning to use the AED will give one the confidence to act appropriately and immediately during an emergency.

As part of the national goal of having one first aider in every home, the Singapore Red Cross is dedicated to teaching people essential lifesaving skills to be used in emergencies at home, at work, or in the community.

The Singapore Red Cross Academy offers a range of courses on essential lifesaving skills. Learning CPR and AED skills gives people the confidence to respond in emergencies, and offer the gift of life. We can make a difference by ensuring we are always ready when crises happen.
