Forum: Junior colleges meeting diverse learning needs

Feb 23). We would like to reassure her that the Ministry of Education (MOE) and schools remain committed to providing engaging and meaningful educational experiences for all students.

JCs are guided by the national curriculum to ensure that students receive a quality and holistic education. Schools exercise professional judgment in adopting varied pedagogical approaches to meet their students’ diverse learning needs.

This can include employing curated videos or online resources to complement classroom instruction. Such use of technology can allow students to embark on self-directed learning and free up time for more smaller-group tutorials and student development activities.

That said, JCs recognise and maintain the importance of in-person learning and teaching. Even where pre-recorded videos are being used, teachers are central in helping students learn through appropriate lesson design and supporting students’ understanding of complex concepts.

Teachers actively monitor students’ progress, identify areas where additional support may be needed, and provide timely feedback to address learning gaps. Students are always encouraged to approach their teachers when they require further guidance.

MOE will continue to work with schools to ensure that teaching approaches remain responsive to the diverse ways students learn. We encourage Ms Cheong to approach the JC directly with the specifics of her feedback so that it can be looked into further.
