The sentence handed down to the manager who collected kickbacks from migrant workers seems too lenient, considering the victims’ vulnerability and the offender’s position (‘ We were scared to lose our jobs’: Nee Soon East estate cleaners who gave manager kickbacks
The offender collected $396,440 from 57 Bangladeshi workers from 2014 to 2020 for the renewal of their work permits. Every dollar he took from the workers would mean less money for them and their families and less with which to repay their debts.
The offender made the lives of the workers under his charge miserable, and I feel his jail sentence of 24 weeks is not long enough.
