I was honoured to attend the Embassy of Ireland’s St Patrick’s Day reception recently.

Ambassador Sarah McGrath hosted the event, and Senior Minister of State Sim Ann represented Singapore.

It was a masterclass in elegant and articulate diplomacy, structured around a framework of formality and cordiality that would have been recognised by early emissaries who travelled to represent their states.

As a mother of three young adults navigating a world where courtesy and civility sometimes seem less valued, I felt privileged to listen to intelligent, articulate and engaging speakers with clear messages.

Two representatives of small but impactful nations with a clear vision and understanding of the state of our world today who spoke about common values with hope for the future built upon a shared past and a present focused on engaging in business, travel and academia, which require the foundation built upon the careful work of diplomacy.

There are larger nations that could learn much from a small green dot and an even smaller red dot.

Happy belated St Patrick’s Day to Ireland, and Majulah Singapura SG60.
