I grew up in the era when Singapore earned its name as a beautiful garden city. But the standard of public cleanliness and hygiene in some areas seems to have declined.

It was recently reported that stallholders at a Clementi food centre had a rodent issue. There is also the problem of crows invading many neighbourhoods, including the Ghim Moh estate. This has been ongoing despite my repeated feedback over the past few years. Crows make an incessant cawing noise which disrupts peace and tranquillity, and this is not helpful for the mental well-being of residents.

The pest problems are often due to poor food waste management. I have observed that trash bins, overfilled with food and other waste, are being left overnight. Even soiled crockery left at tray return stations attracts birds. Such conditions are conducive for pests to thrive. Surely we can do better.

The current system of making “stakeholders” responsible, including town councils and their subcontractors, and pest control companies, doesn’t seem to be yielding satisfactory results, and needs to be relooked. The authorities should take a harder look at the system and processes to ensure proper food waste management at all affected areas.
