Forum: Hope for Singapore-Malaysia ties to continue to flourish

I refer to the recent news report about the 11th Malaysia- Singapore Leaders’ Retreat in Putrajaya. (PM Wong and Malaysian PM Anwar hold joint press conference at Leaders’ Retreat in Putrajaya, Jan 7). I am happy to read that many bilateral initiatives and agreements were made.
As a Singaporean, I have many close relatives and friends on the other side of the Causeway, including in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Melaka and Sabah. My family on the paternal side also has a village house near Sedenak, Johor, which coincidentally is within the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone.
Singapore and Malaysia have been close neighbours and friends for decades, and we hope that this special relationship will continue to flourish for the benefit of both countries and their citizens.
One of the issues that many of us are concerned with is immigration clearance at the land checkpoints. I would like to suggest accommodating more vehicle lanes and also a single checkpoint clearance system for citizens and permanent residents of both countries.
There should also be more student exchanges between the countries, especially for secondary school and tertiary students.
