We thank Mr Goh Eng Chai for his feedback (“Toilets should have ventilation fans to prevent mould”, Jan 3).
Mould formation is primarily caused by insufficient ventilation and high humidity. For this reason, the bathrooms in HDB flats are designed to provide natural ventilation in accordance with prevailing Building Codes. We do not provide exhaust fans in the bathrooms, as they are less energy-efficient. Residents would also have to bear the long-term cost of maintaining and replacing these systems as electrical parts wear out over time. The natural ventilation approach is not unique to HDB flats and is also adopted by many private residential developments.
Nonetheless, flat owners who wish to install exhaust fans in their bathrooms can do so as part of their own renovation. Such installations do not require a permit from HDB, but are subject to guidelines and conditions. For example, power points must not be installed within the bathroom, as it is a wet area.
As usage habits also contribute to the growth of mould, residents should keep their bathrooms as dry and well-ventilated as possible, by opening bathroom doors and windows after use and allowing natural light to enter. Regular cleaning of the bathroom will also reduce the build-up of dirt and grime, thereby preventing mould growth.
