I applaud the new guidelines on screen use for children from the Ministry of Health (No devices for kids at meals and turn off the TV: Singapore issues stricter screen use guidelines, Jan 21).

A key guideline is having no screen time during meals.

I find it concerning that this is not being practised in schools like my sister’s. My sister, who is in Primary 2, often watches videos during her 10-minute snack break which the teachers would play for the class as they eat. At home, my mother does not allow us to use screens during meals.

In the primary school which my neighbour attends, videos are played in the canteen during recess. Instead of watching screens during these times, children should be using the time to eat while interacting with their classmates.

Schools should set the example for healthy screen time and eating habits as children spend a lot of time in school.
