Forum: Guard of honour contingents bear firearms, and SCDF personnel do not

We refer to Mr Mohamad Abdullah Maiden’s letter “Include SCDF in National Day Parade’s guard of honour” (Aug 13).
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), alongside the Singapore Armed Forces and Singapore Police Force, is featured prominently in each National Day Parade (NDP).
The SCDF forms a marching contingent in the parade and ceremony segment. SCDF personnel, vehicles and technology are part of every dynamic display. At NDP 2024, for example, to commemorate 40 years of total defence, the SCDF showcased its responses to civil emergencies with its highly trained personnel and its latest fleet of emergency vehicles.
Personnel within the guard of honour contingents all bear firearms, and the SCDF troops were not included as this is not part of their personal equipment. The NDP executive committee will consider the writer’s suggestion for future NDPs.
