I read with concern about the Government’s intention to gazette 38 Oxley Road as a national monument (

Govt intends to gazette site of Lee Kuan Yew’s house at 38 Oxley Road as national monument

, Nov 3).

While I agree that preserving the site would help current and future generations appreciate how monumental it was to decisions that shaped Singapore, I believe it is equally important – if not more – that we demonstrate respect by not proceeding with this.

Mr Lee Kuan Yew’s role in Singapore’s history is already well-documented. A national monument at his former residence is unlikely to add meaningfully to that legacy. While there may be room for debate on whether such a monument is desirable, what was never in question was how firm Mr Lee was about having his house demolished – and about not having monuments erected in his honour.

We should honour his wish. Rather than a national monument, the greatest tribute we can offer is a monument of respect. A man who served and achieved so much for Singapore – yet refused monuments in his name – deserves nothing less.

Mr Lee has a legacy that can neither be enhanced nor diminished because of a site. However, if his personal wish is not respected, I am unsure of the message we are sending to Singaporeans, present and future.

Singapore has always been different – principled, disciplined, and conscious of the values it stands for. We can continue to lead by example in the lessons of respect and humble service, values that Mr Lee’s life so clearly embodied.

There are times when just because we can do something doesn’t mean we should. Maybe this is such a time.
