I commend FairPrice for extending discounts for Merdeka, Chas and Pioneer generation card holders through 2025 (FairPrice extends discounts in 2025 for seniors, lower-income families, Dec 19).
This initiative provides vital relief amid rising costs and reflects FairPrice’s dedication to supporting the community.
However, I am concerned about the policy requiring card holders to be present in person to enjoy these discounts. While this ensures fairness, it creates challenges for elderly individuals with mobility issues who rely on family members or caregivers for their grocery shopping.
Many such seniors entrust their cards to their caregivers, but these representatives are denied the discounts, which seems unfair given the elderly person’s reliance on assistance.
This policy unintentionally excludes a vulnerable group that stands to benefit the most from these savings.
I urge FairPrice to consider inclusive alternatives, such as allowing authorised representatives to use the card with consent or by implementing a simple verification process.
Such measures would better support elderly shoppers, while maintaining the integrity of the discount system.
FairPrice has always been a champion of inclusivity, and I trust it will address this gap to ensure that no one in our community is left behind.
