I read the article “

Junior colleges will no longer share detailed academic results with their A-level cohorts

” (Feb 21) with disappointment.

It seems amateurish to hide the data to discourage comparison of results.

That the Switzerland-based International Baccalaureate has stopped releasing data from 2023 is not a good example. It is an entity with different objectives.

Our students should learn to compare and be mature enough to understand where they stand among their peers.

Though holistic development is equally important, emphasising it over academic achievements is incorrect. We need to strive to be competent in both worlds, or at least maintain a balance.

Another way of highlighting academic excellence may be to study the results of the top scorers, and find out how some students excel without assistance from tuition and have time to take part actively in community activities. There will be good stories to be picked from this elite group.

With the ease of information flow, we must teach and train our young to be alert, vigilant and street-smart. They must be able to decipher and decide how best to effectively make use of available information. Hiding them is not the way.
