As a regular commuter on the Punggol Light Rail Transit (LRT), I welcome the news that the system will be upgraded with new trains (Sengkang-Punggol LRT to get 15.8 per cent capacity boost with new trains, July 15).

The LRT complements the MRT system by offering convenient first- and last-mile connectivity. Bus services help fill remaining gaps by providing doorstep access where needed.

The MRT remains the backbone of mass transit, efficiently connecting satellite towns. But given the high cost of building new MRT lines, the authorities could consider expanding LRT services to more districts. This would come at a lower cost and could offer greater convenience, improved connectivity, and more affordable fares for commuters.

A more extensive LRT network may also help reduce reliance on cars and buses.
