Still too many suicides

The annual number of suicides, averaging in the 400s since 2000, fell last year (“Number of suicides in Singapore drops in 2023, lowest since 2000”, July 12).

The decrease has been described as being encouraging but the report did not include the number of attempted suicides.

The figure of 322 suicides is not small – it is still 322 too many.

Look to adoption to boost baby numbers

In the article “

Number of babies born in 2023 fell to lowest in at least past 50 years: ICA report

, July 14), academics cited a few possible factors: low fertility rate, high costs of living and opportunity costs.

Another factor could be the number of abortions versus adoptions. More can be done to match couples seeking children (by IVF or adoption) with mums contemplating abortion. Creating supportive networks and providing options beyond abortion could empower women to make informed choices.

Give updates on sports venue closures

It would be helpful for operators of public swimming or other sports facilities to give real-time updates on whether the venues are open, to prevent users from making futile trips only to discover that they are closed due to lightning warnings, for example.

It is often difficult to get through on office phone lines to check. With technology, there can be a better standard of customer service at these facilities.
