I refer to the articleNational heatwave response plan a signal that Singapore should start taking heat seriously” (April 4).

It was reported that workers exposed to the sun are entitled to hourly breaks under mandatory labour laws when conditions become too hot. I would like to ask how these measures are being enforced on the ground.

I often see workers continuing to drill and carry out heavy tasks under the sweltering midday sun, particularly between 1pm and 3pm, when temperatures peak. Are the hourly breaks truly being observed? Are shade and drinking water consistently provided?

Our foreign workers have played a vital role in building and maintaining Singapore’s infrastructure. We owe them not just gratitude, but proper protection, especially in the face of rising heat risks. I hope companies are doing their part to ensure these workers are well cared for.
