I read with concern the news of how the Land Transport Authority intends to enhance its use of bus cameras (LTA looking for ways to detect traffic offences, structural defects using bus cameras, Oct 19). 

Behind the technical challenges elucidated by the article lie much larger ones surrounding privacy, not only about how data is stored but also about how it is being used and why it needs to be used that way.

It is an all too familiar conversation nowadays but one we cannot shy away from, since its implications could be manifested soon.

I laud the idea of tapping and optimising underutilised sources of data, but one has to wonder if using camera feed, very perceivably one of the most intrusive forms of data collection, is the best way.
