I agree that more should be done and quickly to rein in speeding on our expressways, and especially on roads in built-up areas (

Start putting the brakes on speeding now, not later

, Dec 16).

I walk regularly along the roads in my neighbourhood and I see vehicles speeding along these roads with impunity. Their disregard for the speed limit is due partly to the lack of sufficient speed limit signs. There is little to warn drivers that the speed limit is 50kmh, 60kmh or 70kmh.

While on a recent road trip to the United Kingdom, I was amazed to see drivers adhering to the speed limits that are as low as 30kmh in their towns. It was quite a sight to see so many vehicles driving at that speed – something I have never seen in Singapore in my driving experience.

Apart from speeding, there is also a growing tendency for vehicles to beat the red light. Again during my walks, I see vehicles regularly beating red lights when I am waiting at traffic junctions. These vehicles include public buses and I have seen buses beating the red light as a passenger as well as a pedestrian.

More enforcement is needed.

We need to do this quickly if we are to prevent repeat accidents of cars turning turtle or bursting into flames on roads in built-up areas.
