We thank Mr Eugene De Rozario for his letter “

Why do some SkillsFuture courses cost so much out of pocket

?”, Oct 29. We are glad to know that Mr De Rozario had found suitable training options at Udemy. We would like to take this opportunity to highlight that SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG) has worked with Udemy to make Udemy’s annual subscription eligible for SkillsFuture Credit.

While online learning has its benefits in being easy to scale and convenient for learners, traditional classroom-based learning, as well as blended learning, allow for richer trainer-learner and learner-learner interactions. SSG supports a wide range of courses to meet the diverse needs of Singaporeans in lifelong learning and development. Thus, SSG continues to subsidise physical classroom training and online learning, even though, as Mr De Rozario has observed, online learning is generally less costly to provide.

Local training providers consider several factors when pricing their courses, such as mode of delivery – whether physical or online – course materials, class size and duration of the course. The cost differential Mr De Rozario identified may reflect differences in such factors.

We encourage individuals to be thoughtful in planning and selecting courses that best suit their needs. Individuals can use their Careers & Skills Passport to explore personalised careers and skills options while those who require more assistance, including in choosing suitable courses, can also sign up for the Skills and Training Advisory service offered by SSG.
