As a retired Singaporean from the Merdeka Generation, I applaud deputy Opinion editor Mubin Saadat for his article urging institutions and industries to recognise the growing value of polytechnic diplomas ( It’s time the polytechnic diploma got the recognition it deserves
I, too, experienced this dilemma. I began national service in 1971 after completing my A levels. Although Nanyang University had reserved a place for me, I was unable to pursue a degree after completing 2½ years of national service due to financial constraints.
Instead, I entered the workforce with my A-level qualification and secured a government job to support my family and ageing parents.
While working full-time, I continued my education. I obtained a relevant part-time diploma from Singapore Polytechnic at 36 and later earned a locally recognised distance-learning degree from an Australian university at 48.
With these qualifications, together with years of hard work and sacrifice, I progressed in my career and obtained my professional licence.
It is timely for institutions and industries to place greater value on diverse pathways to skills and professional competence.
