Forum: Different rules for returning cans and bottles may be confusing for F&B operators

As someone working in hospitality, I welcome Singapore’s push to reduce waste through the new beverage container return scheme and the “Return Right F&B” option.
The goal of getting more cans and bottles recycled is a good one. But looking at recent guides shared with food and beverage operators, I worry that the different rules for dine-in, takeaway and return points may confuse both diners and front-line staff.
At busy small outlets, staff already juggle orders, payments and tray returns.
If they also have to explain when a 10-cent deposit is charged, when it is not, and where containers must be returned, disagreements at the counter are likely, especially with seniors or tourists.
Clear, simple signage at the point of sale, standard scripts for staff, and perhaps short videos in multiple languages could make a big difference.
This way, the scheme can achieve its environmental goals without adding unnecessary stress to daily F&B operations.
