One Sunday morning at the MacRitchie Reservoir carpark, I witnessed a frustrating yet moving scene.
At 9am, the exit gantry failed, leaving a long line of cars at a standstill for over 10 minutes. When the queue finally began to inch forward, the reason became clear. Grab delivery rider Christopher Ang had parked his bike and, standing in the heat with his helmet still on, was taking cash cards from drivers to tap them through the faulty sensor.
For many of us who served national service, Christopher’s actions brought back memories of the “selfless buddy” – that one individual who, during the most soul-sapping stretch of a route march, would reach out to shoulder a comrade’s field pack without being asked.
Here was Christopher, whose time translates directly into hard-earned money, sacrificing his own productivity to help car owners likely heading for leisure or breakfast. He offered to stand in the sun to fix a problem that could have lasted for longer, and deserves our recognition.
