The Ministry of Health’s move to allow subsidies for the shingles vaccine (Subsidies allowed for shingles vaccine from September, Feb 11) shows the Government’s commitment to the well-being of senior citizens.

Studies have shown that although shingles is typically not life-threatening, it can cause significant discomfort and lead to serious complications, particularly in seniors above 60 whose immune system is weakened and who have underlying medical conditions.

Articles in The Straits Times showed that those inflicted with shingles suffered severe physical pain. Also, numerous letters in the Forum page agreed on the need for seniors to be vaccinated against shingles.

It is heartening to note that this announcement comes even before the ministry’s budget debate, and is yet another win for seniors.
