Ms Jill Lim’s commentary “Celebrating Christmas, despite losing someone dear” (Dec 23) is a sobering yet inspiring message that would resonate strongly with many people, including myself.

It is emotionally draining to lose our loved ones, especially during festive seasons.

While one would like to be surrounded and comforted by close relatives and friends during this difficult time, not many people may be present to share one’s grief, especially when they are busy preparing for the festive celebration.

Grieving over the loss of one’s dear ones teaches us how to be in the world without someone we love in it.

The death of loved ones is not the end of their journey in this world, but the ultimate demarcation point comes when we forget them.

So it is perfectly fine to bring back the memory of our departed loved ones during a family gathering when we can remember their lives, habits and experiences. It is a form of acceptance and adjustment to the loss.

Routines may change, but familial ties which are crucial for a united family should continue. I believe our loved ones who have left us would want us to continue our lives as normally as possible.
