As plans for the redevelopment of the historic Tanjong Pagar Railway Station progress, one idea worth considering is a government-owned communal marketplace within the precinct.
The Government could build and own a dedicated market area with simple stalls rented out at nominal rates to local farmers, urban growers, home-based businesses, artisans, social enterprises and aspiring entrepreneurs. This would provide an affordable platform for Singaporeans to test business ideas without facing high commercial rents.
To ensure fairness, stall allocations could be made through a transparent balloting system. Tenancies could be limited to three or six months before returning to a ballot pool. This would prevent a small group of operators from monopolising the space and allow more Singaporeans to have the opportunity to participate.
The market could feature rotating themes, such as fresh produce, local crafts, heritage foods and sustainable products. Workshops and cultural activities could also be organised, creating a lively destination for residents and visitors.
Such a concept would complement the heritage character of the former railway station. Rather than becoming another purely commercial development, the site could serve as a vibrant public space that supports entrepreneurship, community interaction and local culture.
As Singapore develops the Greater Southern Waterfront, this presents an opportunity to create a distinctive marketplace that benefits both small businesses and the wider community while preserving the unique identity of this historic landmark.
