The Land Transport Authority’s (LTA) move to increase certificates of entitlement ( LTA to add up to 20,000 COEs across vehicle categories over next few years from Feb 2025
LTA said it is able to increase the vehicle population by about 2 per cent of current levels as travel patterns have evolved, with the total mileage clocked by vehicles dropping by about 6 per cent from 2019 to 2023.
If Singaporeans are driving less, existing road infrastructure should be converted to meet future demand, by making walking, cycling and public transport journeys quicker and more efficient. For example, footpaths in historic areas can be widened. Bus lanes open 24/7 along main corridors can help make trunk bus journeys faster. We can also rebuild cycling tracks along main roads.
When it’s quicker and more convenient to travel by public transport, we can achieve lower car dependency, lower road maintenance costs and increased road safety. This will make commuting here better for all.
