In May 2025, a Forum writer highlighted that construction activity had led to hazards for cyclists along the cycling path in Tanah Merah Coast Road ( Act on hazards for cyclists arising from T5 construction work
Back then, a fist-size rock on the road had caused the writer to fall, resulting in a fractured pelvis.
Despite regular maintenance and cleaning activities in recent months, the situation does not seem to have improved. In fact, it seems to have worsened.
Besides the common sight of trucks parked in the cycling lanes, I have also encountered dangerous amounts of sand, stones, wooden planks, metal parts and even nails on my rides. The debris tends to accumulate on the roadside, where the cycling lanes are located.
On a recent Sunday morning, a friend experienced a puncture caused by a nail the length of an adult thumb. That same day, another friend crashed from hitting a loose rock on the road. His helmet cracked from the fall.
Last week, pictures of a huge mound of dirt in the cycling lane circulated on social media. A cyclist had inadvertently ridden through it and crashed.
Although the mess was cleaned up soon after, the reality is that Tanah Merah Coast Road is unsafe and poses a danger to users.
Beyond the existing regular maintenance schedule, I urge the authorities to consider safety plans and upgrades for the cycling path there.
