I applaud the proposed law to impose tougher penalties on motorists caught holding mobile phones while driving (Jail, fine for those caught holding a phone while driving on S’pore roads under proposed law, July 7). Such behaviour is irresponsible and endangers not only drivers but also everyone else who uses our roads.

However, road safety should not be viewed only through the actions of motorists. Motorcyclists and cyclists who use mobile phones while riding also put themselves and others at risk and should face similar penalties.

The same should apply to pedestrians who cross roads while distracted by their phones. This dangerous habit has become increasingly common and contributes to the risk of accidents.

If we are serious about improving road safety, the rules should apply consistently to all road users. A clear and fair approach will encourage everyone to stay alert, act responsibly and help make our roads safer for all.
