I refer to the article “ New fall-risk screening process more easily accessible to seniors
I believe this is a step in the right direction to reduce fall risk, especially since one in four Singaporeans is expected to be aged 65 and above by 2030. However, the authorities can play an important role in reducing fall risk by improving the infrastructure in Singapore.
For example, some common areas and walkways, whether in HDB estates or private developments, use floor tiles or bare cement screed finish, which are rather smooth and do not provide much traction. These can be quite slippery at slopes and in wet conditions if not well maintained. As a senior myself, I have slipped in these common areas and walkways in the past.
The authorities should look into requiring the use of anti-slip materials in such areas, putting in place better lighting to improve visibility, as well as ensuring regular maintenance. I believe such improvements will go a long way towards reducing fall risk among the elderly.
