Forum: Compel all drivers involved in accidents to file insurance reports

Two weeks ago, my car was rear-ended by a van. The collision caused significant damage to my vehicle, and the repair workshop has estimated repair costs exceeding $10,000.
Despite repeated reminders from my workshop and the van’s insurer, the van driver has refused to file an insurance report. As a result, I have to either claim against my own insurance, lose my no-claim discount and face potential premium hikes – or pay more than $10,000 out of my own pocket for an accident that was not my fault.
Engaging a lawyer would likely cost several thousand dollars more, with no guarantee of recovery, as errant drivers could easily declare bankruptcy and walk away unscathed.
This situation exposes a gap in the motor insurance enforcement system.
There appears to be little consequence for drivers who refuse to cooperate or file accident reports, leaving victims with no viable recourse.
I urge the relevant authorities to strengthen regulations to ensure all drivers involved in accidents are compelled to file insurance reports, and that victims are not penalised for others’ negligence or evasion.
Singapore prides itself on fairness and accountability. It is only right that our insurance system upholds the same values.
