We refer to the ST Forum letter “ Disappointed by results of renovation at hawker centre
We appreciate the writer’s feedback and the opportunity to address these concerns. To create a rejuvenated space and enhance the dining experience at Block 51 Old Airport Road Food Centre and Shopping Mall, the premises were closed from June 1 to Sept 30, 2024, for cyclical repair and redecoration (R&R) works.
Since the hawker centre was built in 1972, the agencies maintaining the hawker centre have been keeping it renewed with cyclical R&R works and the Hawker Centres Upgrading Programme.
The recent R&R works allowed the town council to carry out essential works such as repainting the interior and exterior walls, repairing defects in common areas, replacing tables and chairs, installing high-volume low-speed fans, upgrading to energy-efficient LED lighting, refurbishing the toilets, improving the exhaust systems, and installing new floor and wall tiles.
We understand the writer’s concern about the perceived narrowing of space with the new tables and chairs. As this is a widely patronised food centre, the town council maintained a similar number of seats before and after the R&R works, to meet demand while balancing space limitations. There has been no addition of any tables or seats.
To address the ventilation within the enclosed spaces of the premises, additional wall fans and high-volume low-speed fans have been installed to improve airflow. We are also working closely with the hawkers’ association to remind stallholders to ensure that the filters and fans of the exhaust systems within the stalls are maintained and cleaned regularly to help manage cooking fumes.
We are committed to continually improving the estate’s infrastructure for the benefit of our residents. For any estate-related queries, residents may contact Marine Parade Town Council on 1800-241-6487 / 1800-287-6530, or via Facebook/Instagram (@marineparadetc).
