The Singapore Premier League has been struggling to draw fans in recent years.
Today, many Singaporeans can name European clubs, but not a single local player. That gap speaks volumes about how far the domestic game has drifted from public consciousness.
To reverse this, the Football Association of Singapore can adopt a simple yet powerful strategy: Bring the game back into people's daily spaces.
One way is through digital screens at HDB lift lobbies. These high-traffic spots can showcase match highlights, player profiles and upcoming fixtures, subtly building familiarity and interest among residents.
Likewise, advertisements inside MRT trains and stations can capture commuters’ attention and promote local matches.
Buses and taxis can also serve as moving billboards, carrying images of clubs, players and matchday excitement across the island. Such consistent exposure is key to rekindling public awareness.
Storytelling in the media can also be more extensive to connect fans with the human side of the game.
Football, after all, is more than just a game. It is about identity, community and shared experience.
Matches should be marketed not simply as fixtures, but as lively events where families and friends can gather.
Singaporeans have not lost their love for football. By restoring its presence in everyday life, we can reignite the passion that once filled our stadiums.
