Debating is more than a contest of words. At its core, it sharpens critical thinking, hones public speaking, and cultivates the ability to listen and respond thoughtfully. Unlike casual arguments, debating requires research, structured reasoning and the skill to present complex ideas clearly within limited time.

It also trains participants to anticipate counter-arguments, think on their feet and engage with differing perspectives respectfully. Beyond academic settings, these are life skills, valuable in the workplace, in leadership and in daily interactions.

Years ago, Mediacorp hosted debate competitions between our institutes of higher learning (IHLs). These programmes were lively, intellectually engaging and showcased the talents of our students on a national stage. They left lasting impressions. I still recall watching a young Vivian Balakrishnan demonstrate his sharp debating skills, which foreshadowed the articulate leader he would later become.

Reviving the IHL debate competition would not only nurture future leaders, but also inspire a wider culture of civil discourse where reasoned arguments and respectful engagement are valued. In today’s climate of misinformation and divisive rhetoric, the need for such platforms is even greater.

Mediacorp is well placed to bring back this initiative.
