More banks are phasing out paper notifications in favour of app-based alerts. This shift is often marketed as eco-friendly, but could cause issues for many people, especially the elderly.

With the sheer number of notifications we already get on our phones daily, it’s easy to miss important reminders, like payment due dates.

Seniors who may not be as comfortable with technology or don’t check app notifications frequently may be more at risk of overlooking important digital alerts and end up facing penalties.

Many notifications, such as lengthy bills, are also not optimised for mobile. This makes it harder for one to look through a statement properly to notice unauthorised transactions.

To ensure customers are well-informed and able to meet payment deadlines without issue, banks should continue to send paper notifications for important reminders.
